2017 Best Red Stick Dad Finalists

We received some amazing nominees for our first annual Best Red Stick Dad campaign … nominated by wives, fiancés, daughters, sons, sisters, and friends … all who have made a difference in the lives of others and who motivate and inspire those around them. It was a very difficult task, and we really wish we could name everyone nominated Best Red Stick Dad, but we were finally able to narrow the nominations down to the top 10 finalists.

A team of objective judges will determine the Best Red Stick Dad from the finalists below, and the winner will be announced on Saturday, June 17th!

The Top 10 Finalists

Roger Moss

{Nominated by :: Rachel McDonald} My dad is the strongest, compassionate man I know. He puts everyone else’s needs before his own and helps when he can. My dad has been through so much in the last 5 years. Losing his own father in an unimaginable way and being able to overcome and give his own family strength throughout the process. In December 2015 my dad and mom lost their house to a fire. He was able to see and teach Christ by showing calmness and love through that time. In August 2016 2 weeks after getting back into their home they lost everything again in the Great Flood. While helping everyone including cleaning his own house he suffered a heat stroke. He is an amazing man who has shown strength and love to everyone. He deserves the best. He has raised Mark and I to be hard workers, loving, forgiving, and how to have fun in life. We love our Dad.

Adam Mardel

{Nominated by :: Monica Mardel} This will be my husband’s first Father’s Day. We lost our first baby to a late first semester miscarriage two years ago. We then found out I was pregnant again on our move to Louisiana from Washington DC. I had a tough pregnancy and spent several weeks on bedrest. My husband walked me through my difficult pregnancy and held me as I battled post-partum depression. He woke up with my son at night so I was able to rest, and has tirelessly supported and loved our son and me. He works hard, long hours as an FBI agent here in Baton Rouge, so his work plus taking care of his family a home is exhausting. He doesn’t expect praise or recognition, but I want the world to know how special my kind, hardworking, and loving husband is. He is a shining example of a what it means to be a great man and models humility, selflessness, and service to our son everyday.

Ben Young

{Nominated by :: Jackie Young} Ben is the definition of a humble man with a servants heart. He wakes up before everyone to spend time with God so we can be the best dad, husband, teacher, coach(head coach of two sports), and friend. He is respected dearly by his Algebra 2 students and his athletes, who look up to him as a mentor. He is so intentional about coming home with a smile and energy to get on the floor and play. Ben is calm and steady, even in his loving disciple of his children. He also leads a community group for church and serves as a deacon. And he is an incredible husband. Truly, I’ve never met a man who is able to balance things with such grace and joy. He is the best dad around. Respected by all who know him. And loved by those closest.

Charlie Suire

{Nominated by :: Katie Suire} Charlie deserves this award for his selflessness and generosity (for lagniappe he is funny and quirky). Seriously, he is the best dad. Just last week we were in Florida, instead of relaxing in the water or in a lounge chair, he actively played with our 2 boys (Drake age 10, Dayton age 12) the ENTIRE day…playing frisbee, swimming and my favorite part… letting our kids bury him in the sand. This is just one example of the awesome INVOLVED dad he is, he is like this on a DAILY basis. I’m pretty sure that is why kids LOVE to come play at our house, cool kids +fun dad=great childhood memories. But what makes him extra special is his generosity and desire to help others, especially sick or injured kids. You see, 7 years ago tragedy struck our family. Our oldest son was run over by a truck. Our worst fears realized. He survived and is thriving, despite having Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy, but it changed our lives profoundly and has made Charlie so much more aware of other people’s needs. Whether it’s cutting grass for our neighbor who is on bed rest (without being asked), gutting houses after a devastating flood (without being asked), or raising money for our local children’s hospital, he is always giving, without hesitation and never boasting. He is HANDS DOWN the best dad (and husband) ever and we are so blessed to call him ours.

Cody House

{Nominated by :: April Henry} I lost my late-husband four years ago, when my daughter was four months old. At the beginning of this year, I met an amazing man-Cody. He has no biological children, but has taken my (our) daughter in as his own. He became a natural father automatically. Most “fathers” are there from the start. He came in and changed our world. This is his (and our daughter’s) first Father’s Day. I realized that “father” is a verb, not a noun. He has shown me what a true Daddy should be and I am so, very blesssed God has placed him in our lives. He deserves being celebrated for taking amazing care of us over the course of this year.

Mickey Watson

{Nominated by :: Caroline Watson} My dad is the most selfless person I have ever met. He strives to teach me and my brother how to work hard and be 100% in everything that we do. I can recall many times where I have wanted to give up and my dad has talked me into being courageous enough to continue. My dad means the world to me and because of the way he loves me, I know how I should strive to love my own children someday. I can always rely on my dad to provide for his family and to put the happiness of others first. The way that he serves others relentlessly is unmatched in anyone I’ve ever known. There aren’t enough words to describe how amazing of a father I have, but he deserves to win Best Red Stick Dad because he is what every dad should be.

Jackie Wheeler

{Nominated by :: Keylonda} Jackie deserves this award because he is not only a great dad to his own daughter but also his little cousin who has a physically disabled mom with MS and whose dad passed away. Long before becoming a father, he attended “Donuts with Dad”, awards ceremonies, and basketball games. He’s the guy that stops by ALL the neighborhood lemonade stands and will turn around in the road to support a young “businessman” washing cars for a team fundraiser. He also is known for attending all work celebrations and taking home the extra cake so no one has to feel guilty (Haha). Though he wears many hats (both figuratively and literally), he promised that he would save one special thing for his first child and he did just that. On June 2, 2015, he changed his first diaper EVER the day his first child was born. Jackie is an awesome, bedtime story-reading, bargain-shopping, dinner-cooking dad/father-figure and he’d surely be honored to win 2017 Best Red Stick Dad!

John Champagne

{Nominated by :: Elizabeth Champagne} John deserves to be the best red stick dad because he IS the best. To our preschooler son, he is his biggest hero. Everyday our little boy lights up when he hears daddy come home. They wrestle, play superheroes, and catch crawfish in the ditch. John teaches him to be rough and tough, but to love and protect his mommy and sister.

To our two month old daughter, he is a strong protector and loves her fiercely. Her terminal illness has never caused him to waver in his love and care for her, no matter how bleak her future is.

He is a shining example of the unconditional love of a father, and a sweet reflection of our Heavenly Father’s love for us.

Randy Rouyer

{Nominated by :: Leigh Grace Rouyer} My husband hates when a neighbor calls him “Mr. Mom” or when a stranger tells him he’s sweet for babysitting for his wife. He hates it because he’s a wonderful father and helps take care of his kids because they’re his. Whether it’s making them breakfast every morning, changing diapers, or changing sheets in the middle of the night, coaching t-ball, or reading bedtime stories, Randy Rouyer is the hands-on dad every mom dreams of. He loves his kids and he loves his wife. His servant heart and self-sacrifice for the sake of his family daily show our son the example of the kind of husband and father he ought to be one day and show our daughter the kind of man she deserves to marry.
It’s hard to distinguish how my husband is more deserving than other fathers because the relationship between father and child can be so different between families. The biggest testimony to Randy’s qualifications is the way his children look up to and love him. Willa loves to have tea parties with her daddy and Everett loves playing baseball and riding his bike with daddy. In October, he will get to hold his third baby and I can’t wait to see how much this one loves him too.
For all he’s done for us, for how hard he works, and for how much he loves his kids, I nominate Randy Rouyer for Best Red Stick Dad.

Darrell Davis

{Nominated by :: Shaune Wells} Darrell Davis deserves to win the Best Red Stick Dad award because he loves being a dad….We have been together for 4 years and Darrell helped me raise my daughter, my son and his own two sons…Neither one of my two children fathers were ever a part of their lives physically nor financially…. I am a teacher at a preschool in Baton Rouge and it’s inconvenient to take off of work…but Darrell would step in and leave work to take them to appointments, pick them up from school on sick days and extracurricular activities….. Darrell made my life so much easier with his help…. Darrell helps people if they are broken down on the side of the road and if he can help you with anything else he will!!!! On May 29,2017 we were on our way home and two vehicles collided… one vehicle burts into flames … Darrell jumps out of his car and goes to the vehicles … Darrell rescued three ladies one at a time he carried them from the burning vehicle and one male from the other vehicle as other bystanders stood by the scene.
