A visit to the pumpkin patch is a must.
There are those fun activities that I always hear about but never do. Well, finally, I did it! At the first sign of fall, I loaded up the girls and made the quick trip to Mrs. Heather’s Pumpkin Patch in Hammond.
When we arrived, the nicest lady greeted us! Seeing me alone with two kids (one running wildly to the pasture full of pumpkins and the other trying to peak out from the Ergo), a diaper bag, lunchbox, and two water bottles, she immediately helped me get settled. She gave us a wagon to use, which proved to be a lifesaver later on. We paid the $7 entry fee and made our way to the field. My 3-year old Ava’s eyes were quickly fixed on the giant red blob protruding out of the ground! She quickly took off her shoes (which never made it back to her feet!) and began jumping.
Next, she was brought face to face with the neatest zip line! It had seats made from tires and was just fast enough to keep the kids entertained but not enough to give me a heart attack! I was SO proud she wanted to do it; I just kept taking pictures and videos hoping to capture her joy. The adventure continued with visits to the plane see saw, the Indian teepees, and bouncing horse coral. Finally, we decided to sit for a few minutes and have a snack. We were able to bring our own food and drink (although they did have snacks and beverages for sale) and sit under one of the many shaded areas to eat. Soon, sitting still was too much when Ava noticed the big corn pit to play in. This was the coolest idea, and baby sister, Emmeline, was even able to play along!
We continued to play on the many attractions they offered: man made, like the corn maze; others simply made by God, like the big hill to roll down. They all proved to be fun for my wide-eyed 3 year old! After FIVE hours of playing, face painting, and a few photo ops, we picked our pumpkins and headed to the car! Emmeline was asleep before we made it to the parking lot and Ava was out before we got to the interstate. We will certainly be returning!
If you haven’t been to a pumpkin patch this fall, it is not too late! Mrs. Heather’s will be opened until November 4th. I would also like to note a few things I was not expecting. First, it isn’t right off the interstate. Be prepared to make a few U-turns, especially if you are directionally challenged like myself! Also, I had to pay the $7 entry fee for Emmeline, who is only 6 months old. She did get to bring a pumpkin home, and Ava was happy to assist her sister in picking one out!

Which pumpkin patch is your favorite?
We’ve only been to Ms. Heather’s in the spring when it turns into a strawberry patch! We loved it then. Two years in a row we’ve visited the Blackwater Methodist pumpkin patch. It’s much closer to home, and there’s plenty for the kids to do. While I haven’t visited Barn Hill for the purpose of the pumpkin patch, I have seen and petted their wide variety of wild animals! Worth the trip to Ethel, for sure.
