Fall is such a fun season to celebrate with the family! All of us at Red Stick Mom know all about this excitement over the cooler months and all things fall related! From sharing our love about fall, fall recipes, and fall crafts, we are here to talk about it all! This pumpkin volcano is a fun spin on a fall tradition and great as a science activity! The pumpkins are finally rolling into Louisiana. Pumpkin carving is a family fun activity we do every year during this month. Our first pumpkins never last until Halloween. This leaves us carving multiple pumpkins throughout the month: thank you Louisiana heat! If your kids are all about bubbly and overflowing fun, this activity will...
My favorite lesson to do with my four-year-olds was on the book “How Full is Your Bucket? ... for Kids.” The concept is that every person has a bucket. At any given moment our bucket could be full, running out, or empty. The book shows ways in which we empty and fill each other’s buckets. The takeaway for the class was that in a kind and loving community we spend time filling each other’s buckets with love and kindness and in return our bucket becomes full also. This book really tries to teach children empathy. To treat others how they want to be treated. To look out for others and also yourself. When becoming a mother I remember other mothers constantly telling me “you...

Packing a Lunch for your Selective Eater My oldest son is a selective eater; he also has food allergies. It’s important he eats a lunch that he will find delicious enough to eat and will replenish his energy. Now that school is starting back, it’s important to choose a lunch menu that works with his palate and can be prepared. First, I make a list of different things he will actually eat. Our list isn’t that long. I make a list of the main courses that my oldest eats: chicken nuggets, ham sandwiches, spaghetti, red beans and rice, homemade pizza, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. He’s pretty consistent when it comes to the sides as well. He eats macaroni and...
***Please do not assume that anything written below has to do with situations of actual malice. Circumstances when someone says or does truly awful things that demeans another group of people via racism, ableism, etc. should always be confronted.*** We have the option to be offended. There’s a thought process that occurs when we hear something that doesn’t sit right with us. During that process, we can decide that what has been said has nothing do with us and has no bearing on our life, or we can act on impulsive feelings in a hostile, unproductive way. Not every statement is an attack. A woman who vocally celebrates breast feeding an entire year is not putting down women who didn’t or couldn’t...
