August is here! As you’re wrapping up summer and rushing around while preparing for school, don’t forget to take a break with one of our many fun activities happening in the area. We have gathered our favorite family-friendly events in and around Baton Rouge this month and featured them here in the monthly guide.

This month, we’re highlighting a great event from our sponsors at BREC, Flashlight Night at the Swamp happening on Friday, August 11, at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center.

We welcome you to enjoy the swamp at night by visiting us during our Swamp Flashlight Nights! Staff will be facilitating live animal encounters and running special nature films. Enjoy a leisurely night hike with your family and friends. The swamp trails can be really dark at night so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. If you don’t have one, check out our gift shop for some options. Close-toed shoes and insect repellent are recommended. Mom’s Guide to August {Baton Rouge Family-Friendly Events}

August 4 :: During Swamp Bird Walks at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp, visitors enjoy a morning hike through the forest and swamp while identifying various bird species. Bird-watching techniques and identification tips are also discussed. Beginners are welcome. Field guides and binoculars are optional, but recommended.

August 5 :: Mommy and Me: Choose your Troll at Painting and Pinot  is made especially for our younger painters (ages 2-9). Parents will help children paint their masterpiece. A light snack will be provided. Each child will get to choose their troll! Please make sure to register for each child in attendance. Parents do not pay since they will be sharing a canvas with their child.

August 5 :: Louisiana Public Broadcasting invites you to join us for the finale event of Summer of Adventure – Ready Jet Go at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. Everyone attending must have a ticket. Children 12 months old and younger are not required to have a ticket. And if you purchase three or more tickets…  you will receive a year membership to LPB’s Kids Club and a subscription to Passport,  LPB’s newest member benefit!

August 5 :: Get creative this summer at Hands-On Happenings: Bug Out at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum to learn about the amazing world of Incredible Insects in Science Station, and make an artistic bug print that is yours to keep.

August 5 :: Individuals with disabilities and their family and friends are invited to attend Families Helping Families Luau at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon, which includes swimming, music, snacks, and fun! Each person is asked to bring a swimsuit and towel and must have a wristband to enter. For more information or to purchase a wristband: 225-216-7474 (Families Helping Families).

August 6 :: August First Sunday at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum includes free admission to the galleries, $6 reduced admission to planetarium shows, and a variety of art and science exhibitions and activities make this a fun and unique day out for all ages.

August 10 :: Storytime at Lulu & Bean will include 20-30 minutes of interactive reading of books best suited for babies and toddlers, up to age 3. Snacks will be served for all as well as coffee for parents!

August 11 :: Grab a blanket or lawn chair for Movie in the Park: The Wild Life at BREC’s Womack Park.  Enjoy popcorn, as well as other concessions for purchase. The movie will be moved inside the gym in the event of inclement weather. The movie begins at dusk.

August 11 :: Bring your family and friends to join us at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre as they host their free family film series – Make it a Movie Night: Sing! Concessions are available for purchase.

August 12 :: For the Lego Story Craft at the Greenwell Springs Library, Children will make Lego animals following the stories’ “Oh, No, ” said Elephant by A.H. Benjamin, and “That’s Good! That’s Bab! by Margery Cuyler. For more information contact Brenda Graham at 274-4760.

August 12 :: During Flight of the Biplane Story Craft at the River Center Library, celebrate inventor Orville Wright and the origins of flight in August!  Listen to an excerpt from Tales of Famous Americans by Connie and Peter Roop.  Then, create a biplane magnet to take home.  Children ages 8-11. August 12-13 :: Slippery, ooey, and gooey — oh my!  With BASF Kids’ Lab: Playful Polymers at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum, explore how polymers behave using some common household ingredients. Your slimy creation is yours to keep. Each child also receives a cool backpack with surprises inside! Participants may preregister Monday through noon Thursday prior to the program by e-mailing [email protected]; on-site registration is available the day of each program on a first come, first served basis. Groups that schedule in advance may receive confirmed reservations and discounted admission rates. Ages 6-12 with accompanying adults.

August 18 :: Bring your family and friends to join us at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre as they host their free family film series – Make It a Movie Night: Moana! Concessions are available for purchase.

August 19 :: During Engineer It: Dream Big at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum, discover how today’s engineers are inspiring the world at our new monthly Engineer It workshop for all ages, featuring interactive activities with the American Society of Civil Engineers and special showings of Dream Big. Are you ready to build a better summer?

August 19 :: Duck Duck Goose Day at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center gives visitors a first-hand look at waterfowl decoy carving, an art form firmly rooted in Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage, by featuring some of the region’s oldest and rarest decoys displayed by carvers and collectors from all over the deep South. After visiting with our exhibitors and vendors, children and adults can enjoy the day together with hands-on activities like the carving corner, where visitors use soap to carve their own mini duck decoys, a duck box inflatable jump house, live baby duck petting in the duck pen, duck-themed carnival prize booths, face-painting and more!

August 21 :: Save the date for this special solar viewing at Highland Road Party Observatory, the Great American Eclipse! A total solar eclipse is unlike anything you’ve seen in your life. As totality approaches, you will see the astonishing sight of day turning to night and the Sun’s corona blazing in the sky. This is truly a great American eclipse because totality will sweep the nation from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

August 23 :: La Leche League of Baton Rouge presents our first annual Live, Love, Latch! event to celebrate world breastfeeding month and bring together all the breastfeeding supportive businesses, entities, and individuals in Baton Rouge. There will be food, giveaways and swag! All supporters welcome- bring the whole family! La Leche League of Baton Rouge is a local chapter of La Leche League International. Our mission is to help mothers to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother.

August 21 :: Join us on the Mississippi River Levee behind the Louisiana Art & Science Museum’s planetarium theater to experience the Great American Solar Eclipse. (The museum itself will be closed.) You’ll be able to grab your own pair of solar viewing glasses from us for only $2.

August 25 :: Bring your family and friends to join us at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre as they host their free family film series – Make It a Movie Night: The Jungle Book! Concessions are available for purchase.

August 26 :: Assurance Financial Presents Zoo Run Run at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo!  At the run, enjoy the scenery as you scamper, trot or gallop your way through BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. All proceeds from the race support your Baton Rouge Zoo and international cheetah conservation efforts. There will be food, refreshments and some fun animal encounters for the whole family to enjoy after the race. And, anyone in your party who participates in the race or is there to support you, gains free admission to the Zoo as long as they’re on site before admission gates open to the public at 9:30am.

August 27 :: Please join us for the End of Summer Puppy Pool Pawty at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon! Please be advised that this is a dog-friendly event. Participants will encounter dogs in various conditions (i.e. wet, unleashed, etc.). For safety of everyone and every dog, all participants must comply with the “Pool Pawty” rules. This is not an event for small children under the age of 5.

August 30 :: Prince of a Frog Story and Craft at the Zachary Branch Library will allow kids to read Prince of a Frog by Jackie Urbanovic and create their own frog prince complete with his own crown! Registration required. Ages 2-5.

 


 

Opportunity to Give Back

Capital Area CASA Association’s 23rd annual Casas for CASA playhouse fundraiser, presented by title sponsor Faulk and Meek General Contractors, will support CASA’s advocacy efforts on behalf of abused and neglected children in need of safe, permanent homes. A luxury children’s playhouse will be on display July 22-Aug. 13 at the Mall of Louisiana in the main entrance corridor, between Williams Sonoma and Pottery Barn, with $5 raffle tickets on sale for a chance to win. Raffle tickets are also available online at www.casabr.org.

 


 

Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families

Fridays :: Thank Goodness It’s Friday, or TGIF Movie Matinee @ the Library! Relax from a busy work week with a feature length movie at the Jones Creek Regional Library!  Refreshments will be provided.

Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
