To My Child With ADHD

My Darling,

I know you try. I see your frustration when you are trying and can’t get it right. I know your grades aren’t a perfect reflection of how smart you are. You are so very smart. In fact, your imagination and knowledge about certain subjects astounds me. The facts that you tell me and the wisdom on certain things that you share with me blows my mind.

I know you try to sit still, but I know that sitting still is impossible. So I am ok with you wiggling in your chair and running. I know that it makes your mind happy. I know that you want to sit still when we are in certain settings, and I know you try but can’t. I know you aren’t able to focus on things like you would like to. I know concentrating on one thing isn’t easy. I know it’s tough for you.

I can’t imagine being in school and having to sit at a desk with a mind like yours. It’s constantly spinning, and your body wants to react. That has to be hard. It’s probably really difficult to see other students sitting and paying attention in class while you aren’t able to. That’s ok, though. You are learning in your own way.

I watch you play and I see how energetic you are. I love it. I love how you are in constant thought about something fun to do. I love watching you run, ride your bike and build things. Your little brain keeps you busy. I would love to know exactly what you are thinking.

Your dad and I get frustrated a lot, and I know most of what we get on to you about can’t be helped. It’s never frustration because of you. Please be patient with us. Just like you are trying to figure it all out, so are we. We want to help you so badly, and it pains us to see you struggle with things. It probably feels like we nag you a lot, but to us, we are just reminding you. I am sorry if we seem pushy or demanding. We are just trying to help you stay on task the best way we know how.

Believe it or not, there are a lot of positives to thinking the way that you do. You are so creative and adventurous. Fun is basically your middle name. You love excitement and trying new things. You are a huge problem-solver and that is going to get you so far ahead in life. Your ability to think as quickly as you do is such a wonderful asset to have. Being as passionate as you are about things is so wonderful. I think the world would be such a better place if people were half as passionate as you are.

While it might seem hard now, just wait it out. Your life is going to be amazing. When it feels like something is too tough, please stay calm. We are here to help you. Your dad and I want to help you as much as we can. Please understand that we are not against you. We just want to help. You are not “bad.” There is nothing wrong with you or your brain. Please don’t ever think that.

The world is so big, Love. But you are an amazing kid with a big heart. I love you just the way you are.

All my love,
Mom
