Why I Started Red Stick Moms Blog

October 23, 2014 will be the official one-year birthday of Red Stick Moms Blog.  ONE YEAR! As I reflect on the last twelve months, I realized that I’ve learned a lot about what it looks like to be a mom, own a blog, and  balance the two. I’ve also learned so much about this community here at RSMB and the impact we now have in the Baton Rouge area.

rsmb2First and foremost, YOU are the reason behind all of this.  All of the time, work, passion, and vision has been because of the dream to bring Red Stick Moms Blog to the moms of Baton Rouge. Over a year ago, I was introduced to the City Moms Blog Network and saw all they had to offer moms across the country.  I kept wishing that someone in Baton Rouge would make that happen for us! We needed an online community of moms, a way to interact with moms online and off, and a connection to our community.  One day, the lightbulb went off: I will just do it myself!  It was a crazy decision but an amazing one.

My relationship with blogging went from writing a personl, little family blog to running a blog business for all of the Baton Rouge area. My life definitely changed. I went from stay-at-home mom to work-at-home mom overnight. I began learning what it took to balance raising two young kids and a “blog baby” from the ground up.  My co-founder and contributor team were invaluable at the start of RSMB.  Their passion, hard work, ability to connect with moms, and desire to spread the word all over the community were the true building blocks of the blog. And, again, all of YOU were what made RSMB work.  Every Facebook like was celebrated.  Every comment was prized. Every mom we met out and about that told us how “needed” RSMB was for Baton Rouge was like a warm, encouraging hug.  I knew this would be a success.

Owning RSMB has brought me so much. I am here a year later and so amazed at how much we’ve grown.  Here’s why I love it and why I would do it all over again in a heartbeat:

  • It is a business I can truly work at from home. My schedule is super flexible with RSMB. I can spend a day at the zoo with my kids and get “work” done at naptime.  I can answer emails and make phone calls from anywhere. I can meet new moms and sponsors while I’m on playdates.
  • It is a community in every sense of the word.  The moms I have met through RSMB are genuinely interested in meeting and building relationships with other moms.  They are passionate about building common ground with other moms.  Every post we publish that gives moms a sense of belonging or encourages a mom is what we are all about.  I’m so proud of the content we have published and the power it has in connecting moms.
  • It has made me a better mom.  My love for my kids and desire to be the best mom I can be will always be the most important part of my life.  Owning RSMB has connected me to so many new people and given my family so many new opportunities.  I have been able to learn SO much about different aspects of motherhood. And, I have felt so much more connected to the Baton Rouge community.

At the end of the day, I am so honored to own RSMB and to work daily to keep this “blog baby” of mine growing.  Thank you, each of you, for being a part of this incredible community! Here’s to a very Happy Birthday for the blog and many more birthdays to come!
