Fall Shows for Moms

I have to confess, my husband and I watch a good bit of television. To be fair, it's just been the two of us for the last three years (our first is due any day now). So we don't have to share our TV time with Daniel Tiger or Sesame Street juuuust yet. And while I'm a huge proponent of unplugging and spending quality time together, which we do often, there's also something to be said about being able to zone out and be entertained for a little bit after a long day. So, as a self-confessed TV aficionado, here are a few shows I'm super excited are returning, and a couple new ones I'm planning on checking out. New...

Ditching the Dish

We are a TV family.  At one point, I would estimate that I had 30 different shows in my DVR queue.  So you can imagine my husband's shock when I suggested that we call DirecTV to cancel our service.  How would we live without 150 channels? Without live sports? Without at least 10 episodes of Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood available at any given time and for any given toddler meltdown? To be honest, I didn't really know the answer to those questions.  All I knew was that the money going toward our cable bill would be very useful elsewhere. When I reached out to my Facebook friends for advice on dropping our television service, I was shocked by how many had...
I’ll be the first to admit, I’m easily influenced by what I see on television.  I see a commercial for fried chicken and I’ll immediately want Popeyes for dinner. However, I’m an adult and also possess the ability, for the most part, to make rational decisions about what I desire versus what I need.  As my kids are getting older and now have more access to television than in past years, I’m beginning to see firsthand the negative effects television has on my kids, mainly advertising. When my kids were younger, they’d tend to watch TV shows on channels like PBS, Sprout & Nick Jr. which had limited, if any commercials. However, now that my oldest has outgrown most of...

First Sunday Funday

I love affordable outings with my toddler, and my favorite price is free! I never know how long my two year old will be agreeable, so I hate to do anything too pricy. When I read about First Sunday at the Louisiana Arts & Science Museum, I knew it was right up my alley. What’s First Sunday? On the first Sunday of each month, LASM offers free general admission and reduced admission to planetarium shows. The museum has a little something for everyone.  For fans of all things space, there is a planetarium featuring a 60 foot dome screen as well as space science exhibits.  The art fans will be impressed by the changing art exhibitions.  And if history is...
