I have a distinct memory of sitting in the backyard of the house I grew up in, asking my mom to play Barbie Dolls with me. “Sweetie,” she said, “Mommy will dress the Barbies and brush their hair, how about you make them talk?” I remember thinking, as a five-year-old, that this was so odd. How could my mom not want to engage 24/7 in the imaginative play that my sister, my friends, and I delighted in and couldn’t get enough of? But now? I get it. I absolutely adore overhearing my five, seven, and even two-year old use their imaginations for pretend play. My five-year-old has especially dramatic voices she uses for her dolls and my seven-year-old can set...
Before I had children, I would have described myself as a book worm. Now my reading consists of stories about princesses, llama mommas, and curious little monkeys. Reading always came easy to me. Picking up a book and getting lost in the words was a comfort. Since having children, I’ve tried to make it my goal to get back to reading books for myself. But honestly, after a long day at work, cooking dinner, cleaning up the kitchen, and getting the kids into bed I’m exhausted and reading feels like a chore. Introducing the Libby App While scrolling through social media, I saw a friend’s Facebook story about all the books she has already listened to this year utilizing the free Libby app....
Climb Out of the Darkness on June 25th :: Raising Awareness for Maternal Mental Health Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) affect 1 in 5 women during the reproductive process and approximately 1 in 10 men who have taken on the fathering role. These disorders include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, and psychosis during and after pregnancy. PMADs are the most common birth complication in the United States, and BIPOC and LGBTQ+ populations are even further impacted. Because of this, an organization called Postpartum Support International is working diligently to raise awareness for maternal mental health in the United States and beyond. Part of their awareness and fundraising campaign is an event called Climb Out of the Darkness. Cities around...
Our family has been fostering dogs for the past couple of months. As scary as a jump that was, it has been a fun experience for me as well as my husband and kids. I understand not everyone can take animals into their home, however, there are a few things YOU can do to help local Baton Rouge animals. Donate used towels. Animals are sometimes gross... we go through SO MANY towels cleaning up messes when we are fostering. Save your towels when you get new ones & pass on your used towels for messes and clean up. Donate blankets. These can be your old blankets when you are cleaning out your closets OR Walmart usually puts their fleece blankets on sale for $2-$3...
There is laundry everywhere. An untidy jumble of folded and unfolded clothing that has sat on our dining room table for over a week, individuals snatching what they need, never bothering to put it away. But I can’t say anything. I haven’t bothered either. Because dust has settled on every surface even though I could have sworn I just dusted. And the kitchen island is forever in flux between clean and crumbs. And we spent an entire weekend weeding, putting the overgrown flower beds back to some semblance of order, only for the heat and rain to force the ever creeping chaos of new weedlings free of the soil. And my children have run out of clean uniforms and underwear again, because of...
