Does it always seem that you happen upon the perfect gift for someone in April, but the occasion isn’t until the end of the year? You decide to leave the perfect gift. Then along comes the event and you are scrambling to come up with something. Then you need a gifting closet. My gifting closet is my favorite money-saving and last minute stress-reducing hack. Don’t let the fact you don’t have a dedicated “closet” keep you from creating a space to store gifts, cards, and wrapping paper. My gifting closet is 2 shelves in my kitchen pantry next to all my Tupperware, crafting supplies, and too many water bottles to count. I love giving gifts, from birthdays to those random...
Three years ago this month, a couple of friends and I started a book club. We started strong with Becoming by Michelle Obama and I’m happy to report that we’ve been meeting monthly ever since. As a lifelong reader, it’s astonishing to me that I’d never been in a real-life in-person book club before this one. This is my first ever in-person group and it has exceeded my expectations! Of the original group, five out of six of us are still actively meeting, even though one woman lives in New Orleans and another Zooms in from Denver; the seventh person moved to France, so we give her a pass! Bookclub is one of the highlights of my month. I...
There are certain things that make time stop and crawl at a painful pace. For our family, this has been our past few weeks. Around Thanksgiving, my husband noticed his lymph nodes in his neck felt off and swollen. After they did not resolve themselves and shrink back, he decided to seek medical attention. This began the roller coaster of blood work and tests (30 different tests in one month to be exact). At this point, we are eliminating things that ARE NOT happening inside his body in hopes that the process of elimination would show exactly what is going on. This is a hard spot for me... our bodies are incredible beings. There are so many parts interacting (or...
Loss is inevitable, but it’s crushing when it happens to you. Loss hurts, it will trigger many complicated emotions. You may feel sad, infuriated, devastated, confused, frustrated, alone, regretful … all normal feelings to feel, all exhausting to feel. Especially when you throw a couple of kids into the mix. Parenting is an around-the-clock gig, as you well know. When you lose someone, there are still bottles to be made, early morning trips to school, and homework assignments to micromanage. The kids still need to eat, and the white school shoes still need to be unearthed. Kids are still busy fighting over the fairy catcher toy, unbothered by the eleventh condolences phone call of that day. Kids may or may not...
Several times a year, I purge every closet, drawer, and storage space in my house. Most of the time, my efforts are half-hearted, and I tend to hold on to things that either no longer fit my body or my design aesthetic. Today, at the request of my husband, who was VERY RIGHTFULLY tired of my clothing mountains, I purged YEARS of clothing. Frankly, it was something I had been avoiding after I’d gained a significant amount of weight following my mid-pandemic realization that I’d spent my entire life with an eating disorder. It started innocently enough: a complete meltdown during which I emptied every single drawer onto the floor while searching for Spanx that were MIA. I didn’t find the...
