In an effort to raise money to send my son to summer camp, I recently hosted a garage sale. Just the thought of doing all that work is probably enough to make any mom nauseated, but I also enjoy a good challenge and the feeling of a hard-earned dollar. And I'll take any and all opportunities to clean my house and convince my husband to purge it of unnecessary things. The problem is my definition of "unnecessary" is so broad that it usually applies to anything that's not currently in use and not moving at the time.  In an ideal world, I'd be a minimalist. I'm sure from the outside, my wardrobe indicates that I already am. I have weird...
Growing up, our house was always neat. Even when it wasn't sparkling clean, everything was in its place. It wasn't something my mom talked about or drilled into our heads; it just was. I remember being confused when I went to friends' houses whose parents didn't have the same knack for neatness. Why was there so much stuff everywhere? Before that, I didn't realize that there was any other way to be. Other than our individual messy phases (mine in high school, his in college), my brother and I both inherited the neat gene.  The first test to my neatness came in college. Roommates. Let's just say, I was a difficult person to live with (though I prefer to believe...
If you work or have kids or are a breathing human being, mornings come every day. Every.Single.Day. And, even for the most morning of morning person, finding a routine to kick off your day can be a challenge. Well, I think I’ve found my magic morning combo. And tricky enough, it actually starts with a nighttime routine. I blogged about a nightly brain dump last month. That’s where it starts. I’ve also set up a “bedtime” routine in my iPhone. There are multiple apps for this same purpose; I’m a big fan of Sleep Cycle as well! I know that 7 hours is a minimum sleep total for me to function. So, if I’m not in bed by 10:30pm, my...
Do you have trouble sleeping? Is there a constant to do list running in your head? Do you always think you’re about to forget something? Y’all, this is my life. Between work, kid, my side business, church involvement, and blogging I have always felt like my to do list wasn’t complete or something was going undone. Well, y’all, I have the answer! Ok, I have MY answer and maybe this will work for you too … A Nightly Brain Dump In the middle of searching for ways to reign my house and routine, I read Emily Ley’s “A Simplified Life.” This book was amazing. It was all the best parts of “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” plus an overall approach...

The Freedom of Letting Go

Two days after Christmas, my husband and I moved from a four-bedroom house to a three bedroom apartment. After the flood, we had sold our house and moved to a rent house with plans to buy not long thereafter. Then my husband was laid off. And suddenly those temporary lodgings became a bit more long-term. So when Christmas rolled around, and we still weren’t ready to buy a house, I was pretty annoyed with the situation. Moving into a smaller apartment seemed like a step backwards instead of forwards, which stressed me out immensely. A few days after we moved, my daughter told me, “I don’t want to go to our new home, Mama. I want to go to our...
