Costco :: My Solution to Buying Organic for Less Green

Costco :: My Solution to Buying Organic for Less Green

I joined Costco about a year ago (at last year’s popular Costco Mom Hour, in fact!). I never thought of myself as a “buy in bulk” type of person, but I figured I’d give a shot and see how it went. Here we are a year later, and I’m pretty much hooked on Costco. Why? For me, it’s all about the availability of certified USDA Organic products, often at a fraction of the cost when compared to other sellers of organic products.

Buying imageorganic food is something that is important to me, especially after starting a family. But let’s face it; it’s not always in the budget to do so. Costco has made buying organic on the regular a reality for my family in Baton Rouge. Costco’s bulk prices make organic products much more affordable, and I have plenty of whatever I am buying so that I am good to go for at least a month, sometimes longer! And the quality of the brands offered, including Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand, is top notch.

Here are just a few of the organic products available at Costco:

1. Meat

This is probably the number one category that I absolutely must buy organic whenever possible. Costco has ground beef, chicken and even bison available, just to name a few of the organic meat choices. And of course, eggs. All at competitive prices and bulk sizes, which means you always have something in your freezer when you need it.

2. Snacks

The kids (okay, and probably the adults, too, if you live in my house) are going to be snacking, so you may as well buy organic if it’s affordable! At Costco it definitely is. We love their organic apple sauce, animal crackers, salsa, chips to go with that salsa, juices, peanut butter — just to name a few!

3. Staple items

I love being able to buy organic products that either weren’t available or I just couldn’t afford before Costco came into my life. Things like olive oil, sugar, canned vegetables, rice, sauces and so much more.

Here’s a super easy, all organic {yummy} meal that takes very little effort:

Organic Pasta a la Costco

  • Organic spaghetti sauce OR organic stewed tomatoes if you want to create your own sauce
  • Organic olive oil
  • Organic pasta
  • Organic ground beef
  • Salad using the organic veggies available (and there are lots) with an organic dressing of your choice

Cook the pasta (I love the Garafalo brand). Brown and cook the ground beef. Add your sauce. Make your salad. Voila! A ridiculously easy meal that is organic and delicious.

I’m pretty sure I’ve maxed out my allotted usage of this word by now, but the affordability of ORGANIC products is a winner in my book. It’s also worth noting their great prices/quantities on things like diapers and wipes, it’s a very clean and well-kept store, and an overall positive shopping experience. If you’ve been thinking about giving Costco a try, now is the perfect time to do so!

Fleur
Fleur (which rhymes with ‘blur’ and is French for “flower,” in case you were wondering) is a former media relations and marketing professional happily turned mommy to two daughters, a spunky, sweet toddler and a roly-poly infant that is pure sunshine. She always assumed she would return to work full-time after maternity leave, but the role of Mother grabbed her by the soul, and she has been lucky to remain at home while still having an outlet as a freelance writer and the managing editor here at Red Stick Moms. A wandering heart to the core, Fleur and her husband of 10 years have traveled and lived in many places, but are happy to have returned home to Baton Rouge shortly after the birth of their first child. Based on her choices when it comes to motherhood and parenting, Fleur would likely be dubbed a “crunchy” mama, but her husband would just call it making things more complicated than they have to be…for the good of their daughters, he would TOTALLY add {wink wink}. Fleur loves Jesus, coffee, languages and words, hilarity that comes with honest conversations about this crazy little thing called life (solidarity, Sisters), photography, and the idea of sleeping through the night. She'd really love to sleep through the night.
