When You Don’t Drink in Louisiana

Louisiana. Just even hearing the name of our beloved state conjures quick thoughts of LSU or Saints tailgate parties, parades, and not to mention the best food in the country.

These integral parts of our culture also include one very specific ingredient …

Alcohol.

You can’t even attend a crawfish boil without a pack of local beer, or drive a few miles down the street without seeing a drive thru daiquiri shop.

When you make the decision that you aren’t going to drink alcohol at all anymore, how can you when it’s ingrained in our local tapestry?

Personally, I enjoyed all the “fun things” alcohol had to offer when I was younger … you know, making poor decisions that make now thirty year old me cringe … and laughing about it the next day.

Even in my college days, there was that moment of reflection where I knew what I was doing was wrong for me. As I got older, I really saw the effects of how alcohol could damage your relationships and your body. I knew it was best to let it go.

So I (or I should say we, my husband included) decided that we were not going to drink alcohol anymore for a variety of reasons.

There is now a new learning curve on how to socialize and enjoy the city. It requires willpower since I loved local beer, but there is still a lot Louisiana has to offer. And I’m determined to enjoy this beautiful state alcohol free!

Camille
Camille has always had ties to Baton Rouge even though she didn’t live here until she finished college. Both of her parents grew up in the Red Stick but she was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. After graduating from the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!) with a BA in Communication Studies, she moved to Baton Rouge and welcomed her adorable son Caleb (7) less than a year later. She navigated life being a divorced mom until 2015 when she married her incredibly supportive husband Chris in San Francisco. They welcomed baby Christian in the summer of 2017. Truly a “Jane of all Trades”, she has worked in non-profit, local news, retail management, and owned a successful childcare facility. All roads led her to be an elementary school teacher which she believes is her calling. Camille enjoys “family fun days” where they explore BR, CrossFit, baking, and drinking all the coffee. She lives with her family in Ascension Parish with their chubby puggle Chloe.
