2016 is here! This year, make a resolution to have more fun as a family and explore this amazing city. We will be gathering our favorite, family-friendly events in the Baton Rouge area each month and feature them on a monthly guide. This month, we have everything from indoor winter crafts to outdoor family fun!

January 2, 3 :: Don’t miss your last chance for Ice Skating on the River and enjoy that last bit of holiday fun! Several time slots are available beginning at 9:30am. Tickets are $12 per person.

January 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 :: Get downtown and grab some local produce at the Red Stick Farmer’s Market. Walk along Main St. and be sure to stop by the kid’s booth for free tokens and activities.

January 3 :: First Free Sunday at the LASM. Explore the science museum, children’s play area, and planetarium for FREE! Museum opens at 1:00pm.

January 5, 9, 27 :: Learn how you can be a voice for a foster child with CASA’s Volunteer Orientation.  This 45-minute information session is a great way to learn how you can be more involved in the community this year.

January 6 :: Enjoy a story and a yummy treat during Kid’s Night at La Divina. This free event features local authors reading their books.

January 9, 10 :: Have some hands-on fun and learn about science with the BASF Kid’s Lab. Call to register for this free event.

January 12 :: Preschoolers will love learning about animals at the monthly Zoo & Me Morning playdate at the Baton Rouge Zoo. Call to register.

January 14 :: Mermaid lovers will be in wonder as the Louisiana Mermaid visits the Main Library for storytime and greeting. For ages 3 and up.

January 15, 16, 17 :: A race for all ages during The Louisiana Marathon— a kid’s race, 5k, half and full marathon. A weekend-long expo and finish festival round out the weekend.

January 16 :: Celebrate Arbor Day at the Burden Center with story time, tree-themed activities, hayrides, and more. $10 adult and $5 child admission.

January 20 :: Enjoy a time to create at Little Picasso’s at BREC’s Baringer Road Park.

January 21 :: Kids will love the puppet show and magic tricks at Paddington’s Magic Show at the Denham Springs Library. A take home craft is also provided.

January 22 :: Grab your blanket and bring the whole family for Movies in the Park. This month, “Inside Out” will be featured at BREC’s Cedar Ridge Park. Concessions are available for purchase.

January 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 :: Stop by the Baker Library every afternoon this week for Jigsaw Puzzle Mania. There will be plenty of puzzle fun for kids ages 4-11.

January 31 :: Nothing says science like KABOOM! Head to the Manship Theater for Doktor Kabooom LIVE! This show explores electricity and is great fun for all ages.  Tickets are $15.

    The LSU Museum of Art is also open for First Free Sunday. Free gallery admission and family-friendly art activities offered from 1-5pm.

    Are there any MLK observance/service activities that you recommend for littles?
