July is here! Fun activities for sunny days and rainy days alike are available for you and your family to continue to make memories and enjoy the peak of summer. We have gathered our favorite family-friendly events in the Baton Rouge area this month and featured them here in the monthly guide.

Mom’s Guide to July {Baton Rouge Family-Friendly Events}

This month, we’re highlighting a great event from our sponsors at BRECMovie At The Lagoon: Surf’s Up 2 – WaveMania on July 15 at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon! The movie will start at dusk. Participants are asked to please bring beach towels or blankets for the movie, which will be shown on the grassy “island area” of the park. Limited concessions will be sold for the event. BREC’s Liberty Lagoon has a capacity of 900 people. Patrons may purchase wristbands in advance starting June 1, Monday-Friday from 11:00am-6:00pm or the day of the event beginning at 10:00am at the Liberty Lagoon Guest Services window if tickets are still available.

Mom’s Guide to July {Baton Rouge Family-Friendly Events}

July 1 :: Red, White and Zoo at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo will include Safari Amphitheatre programs, games and crafts featuring some of our red, white and blue Zoo animals. Regular Zoo admission applies.

July 1 :: Join us at the Main Library for Lady Liberty Hats Make & Take! Children will make a lady liberty hat out of paper plates and construction paper hearts in honor of Independence Day. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Sorry, no groups. Ages 3 to 11.

July 1 :: At the Louisiana Art & Science Museum’s Hands-On Happenings: Sand Art, castles aren’t the only thing you can create with sand. At this month’s hands-on art workshop for both the young and young at heart, make your own sand art masterpiece to treasure for years to come!

July 2 :: Free 1st Sunday-USS KIDD is a partnership program among several downtown Baton Rouge museums that gives families an opportunity to visit local museums free of charge. The USS KIDD Veterans Museum will be open from 10:00am to 4:00pm but the majority of our “themed ” activities take place from noon until 4:00pm in the museum lobby.  For more information, please call 225-342-1942.

July 3 :: For Fireworks Salt Painting at the Jones Creek Library, come and hear Happy Birthday America by Mary Pope Osborne, and make a cool painting of fireworks using salt and watercolors.  Please dress appropriately for a messy activity.  Ages 6-9.  Registration is required and limited to 15 children.

July 3 :: Civic, community, and patriotic groups parade through the Kenilworth neighborhood of Baton Rouge during the Kenilworth Independence Day Parade. Come celebrate our nation’s freedom and catch some beads and throws.

July 4 :: USS KIDD July 4th Spectacular is the place to be as friends and families gather to commemorate our nation’s independence while enjoying ice cold drinks, delicious food and a variety of musical performances.

July 4 :: View WBRZ’s annual Fireworks on the Mississippi from atop the Shaw Center for the Arts’ Pennington Rooftop Terrace with Red Stick, White & Blue Celebration. Enjoy hamburger sliders and hot dogs with homemade potato chips from Capital City Grill and dance the night away with music from DJ Kevin Moreau of Deep South Productions. A cash bar will be available with complimentary soft drinks and water.

July 5 :: Ever wanted to grow your own garden? Come to the Main Library for Bloom Where You’re Planted Storycraft to hear a story about a Koala and her quest to make her own flowers. Afterwards, we will color flower pots and plant radish seeds. You will be well on your way to growing your own garden! All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 8 children. Sorry, no groups. Ages 3 to 5. 

July 5 :: Join us at the Jones Creek Library for Let’s Go LEGO! There are many ways to get where you are going and Fly Guy tries most of them in Ted Arnold’s fun book, Ride, Fly Guy, Ride! After listening to the story and finding inspiration by looking at pictures of LEGO transportation sculptures, children will build LEGO “things that go.” These creations will be displayed at our library following the program. Ages 4-8.  Registration is required and limited to 20 children. 

July 7 :: Stories in Art at the LSU Museum of Art is a kid-sized program designed to support reading and art making for ages 0–6 with parent/caregivers. Enjoy a different book and art project each month designed to make families comfortable exploring in a museum setting. July 7 :: Come to the Greenwell Springs Road Library for Paws at Work and watch a presentation by the Baton Rouge Police Department featuring the incredible K-9 Units.  The handlers will talk about their dogs, explain how they help law enforcement, and demonstrate some of their special skills. Ages 2 and up.  Registration is required.   

July 7 :: Make it a Movie Night: Finding Dory at BREC’s Independenct Park Theatre. Enjoy comfortable indoor seating during our monthly free film series. Concessions are available for purchase.

July 8 :: Visit Painting and Pinot for Mommy and Me: Choose your Troll! This class is made especially for our younger painters (ages 2-9). Parents will help children paint their masterpiece. A light snack will be provided. Each child will get to choose their troll! Please make sure to register for each child in attendance. Parents do not pay since they will be sharing a canvas with their child.

July 10 :: Charlie the Noise Guy brings Mighty Mouth to the Zachary Library! Get ready for NOISY stories!  Ages 5-up. 

July 12 :: Visit the Jones Creek Library for Summer Funtime Pajama Storytime. For children 3-7 years old and their families. 

July 13 :: Storytime at Lulu & Bean will include 20-30 minutes of interactive reading of books best suited for babies and toddlers, up to age 3. Snacks will be served for all as well as coffee for parents!

July 13 :: Come by Lil Bambinos for Christmas in July, with appearances by The Snow Queen, Polynesian Princess, AND our favorite Snowman who LOVES summer! There will also be crafts, activities, and tons of FUN! Get your tickets now!

July 15 :: During LPB’s Summer of Adventure with the Wild Kratts, fans of all ages will have the opportunity to enjoy a movie and meet some furry friends at our petting zoo! And if you purchase three or more tickets … you will receive a year membership to LPB’s Kids Club and a subscription to Passport, LPB’s newest member benefit!

July 17 :: Catch the End of Summer Reading Party at the Central Library! Games! Spacewalk! Clown! Prizes! Refreshments! Face Painting! Tons of FUN to celebrate the end of summer! Come and join us! Children ages 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Ages 3 and up. Groups are required to register. Check out the East Baton Rouge calendar of events for more parties happening near you!

July 21 :: Manship Theatre presents HONK! Jr. The Musical Production! Adapted for young performers, and with a score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe (Mary Poppins), Honk! Jr. is a heartwarming celebration of being different that is sure to delight audiences of all ages with its sparkling wit, unique charm and memorable score. Witty and hilarious, but also deeply moving, Honk! JR. will treat your audiences to equal amounts of laughter and tears. Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters. The other animals on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite his mother’s protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about himself, the little fowl finds himself on an adventure of self-discovery, all the while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry Cat. Along the way, Ugly meets a whole flock of unique characters and finds out being different is not a bad thing to be.

July 22 :: Visit BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo for Frozen Safari as we keep it cool this summer. This special day will focus on animal enrichment and teach visitors what the Zoo does to promote animal wellness on a daily basis. Frozen treats will be available for visitors, as well as the animals! The first 100 people to enter the Zoo will receive a coupon for a free frozen treat at the Zoo’s Cool Critter Café. Regular Zoo admission applies.

July 29 :: Pelican State Credit Union’s 14th Annual FREE Kids Bike Race is for all kids ages 12 and under at Abundant Life Church in Denham Springs with registration starting at 9:00am. At 10:00am, there will be three races divided by age group: 5 and under, 6-9 and 10-12. PLUS, Pelican is giving away 3 parties for 10 at Area 51! All kids will be entered to win, and one winner will be drawn per age group. In addition to the races, medals of completion and goody bags for all race participants, there will be healthy refreshments, music, games, fire truck tours, a bounce house and face painting for the kids as well as door prizes for parents. If you pre-register your kids by Tuesday, July 13 at 5:00pm, they will also receive a free shirt on the day of the race. The race is completely FREE fun for the whole family!

July 29 :: During Solar Viewing at Highland Road Park Observatory, weather permitting, HRPO staff shows the Sun in three manners projected onto a white surface, directly via safely-filtered optical light and directly with a hydrogen-alpha telescope. With these techniques, visitors are able to see any sizable sunspots or flares occurring. Don’t miss the highest level of solar activity for the next 10-20 years. Protective clothing and sun-screen recommended.

Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families

Mondays :: Mondays are for Moms! Beat the heat and join us at Balance Holistic Health every Monday this summer for FREE Prenatal and Postnatal exercise classes! Check out classes and descriptions on our website, and be sure to sign up as spaces are limited!

Tuesdays & Thursdays :: Mommy & Me Spanish Class at Java Mama designed for babies-5 year olds to explore the language through songs, puppets, and imaginative play. Fridays :: Splash & Play at Crawfish Swim School’s indoor heated pool offers 1 hour time slots for swimmers 12 & Under (4 years & under must have an adult in the water with them). Swim Test required at start of the event (lifevests provided if needed- no outside flotation support devices permitted). We offer two 1 hour time slots at 5:00pm and 6:00pm.

Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
