May is here and Baton Rouge is in full bloom! In addition to all the enjoyable outdoor events available around Baton Rouge, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate the beautiful women in your life for Mother’s Day. We have gathered our favorite family-friendly events in the Baton Rouge area this month and featured them here in the monthly guide.

Mom’s Guide to May {Baton Rouge Family-Friendly Events}

This month, we’re highlighting a great event from our sponsors at BREC, Derby Day at Farr Park Equestrian Center. Join us for a Kentucky Derby Viewing Party! Get ready for family fun and fast horses. Come dressed to impress May events at BRECas you enjoy all the action of the Kentucky Derby live on the big screen in the arena. You can bet on a good time complete with derby-themed activities for adults and kids, food, drinks, music, mint juleps and more!

This year’s Derby Day event will be even bigger and better with more games, music and kid-friendly activities. Break out your best bowties and floppy hats for the hat and bowtie contests or test your skills on one of our stick horses. Enjoy music and drinks and, of course, the Kentucky Derby races live on the big screen. BREC on the Geaux will also be on site with fun and games galore. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children and includes complimentary soft drinks and waters as well as food provided by Mike Andersons. Mom’s Guide to May {Baton Rouge Family-Friendly Events}

May 1 :: Line4Line provides free haircuts for boys ages 3-13 in exchange for reading a book at Oneal’s Barber & Beauty Salon. 449Book Club, food and art activities. This program continues the first Monday of each month.

May 3 :: Visit the Zachary Branch Library for Sunshine Rainbow Story and Craft where kids 2-5 can listen to A Rainbow All Around Me by Sandra Pinkney and then create a sunshine rainbow with a paper plate, construction paper and crepe paper. Registration is required.

May 5-7 :: Don’t miss Disney On Ice Presents Follow Your Heart, featuring Dory, the emotions from Inside Out, your friends from Frozen, the Toy Story gang, and more! Multiple showtimes available. 

May 6 :: SHrEdders – Girls Beginner Skate Clinic at BREC’s Perkins Road Skatepark is for ages 6-10. For more information or to register call 225-766-9039 or email [email protected].

May 6 :: Hands-On Happenings: Polystyrene Prints at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum is inspired by our Polymers in Art through the Centuries exhibition. With help from our art educators, discover how to create your own prints using only polystyrene foam, a pen, ink, and paper.

May 6 :: Emerge into Paradise for a musical pleasure voyage that benefits The Emerge Center! Featuring “Stayin’ Alive” Bee Gees Tribute, Where Y’acht, classic Piano Bar, DJ Otto’s Underwater Aquarium, and more!

May 7 :: Test your skills at the annual Hooper Hustle Mountain Bike Races at the Hooper Road Mountain Bike Trails,with over five miles of trails to cover including tight trail, hills, bumps, climbs and drops. Not for the faint hearted! Categories include Beginner (one lap), Sport (three laps) and Expert (four laps).

May 7 :: Java Mama hosts Cupcakes Canvas Mother’s Day Paint Party for children ages 2 yrs. and older. The theme will be Mother’s Day! Enjoy cupcakes by Cupcake Allie and light refreshments for $25.00 per ticket.

May 7 :: Spend some time with your friends or family this May First Sunday at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum! Free admission to the galleries, $6 unlimited admission to planetarium shows, and a variety of art and science exhibitions and activities make this a fun and unique day out for all ages.

May 7 :: The mission of the LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER production, happening at the Trademark on Third, is to take the audience on a well-crafted journey that celebrates and validates mothering through giving voice to motherhood–in all of its complexity, diversity, and humor–in the form of original readings performed live on-stage by their authors.

May 9 :: Get ready for Mother’s Day at the Central Branch Library with Toad-ally Awesome Mom Story/Craft. Kids can listen to T. Rex and the Mother’s Day Hug by Lois Grambling and make cute signs to tell someone special how “toad-ally” awesome they are! Ages 3 to 7. Registration required.

May 11 :: Storytime at Lulu & Bean will include 20-30 minutes of interactive reading of books best suited for babies and toddlers, up to age 3. Snacks will be served for all as well as coffee for parents!

May 11 :: Celebrate Mom at the River Center Branch Library with Happy Mother’s Day, as we read My Mom by Anthony Browne and then create a handprint flower craft. Children ages 4-8.  Program is limited to 12 participants only on a first-come, first-served basis.  For more information, call 389-4959.

May 12 :: Mid City Makers Market was born when a holiday home trunk show outgrew the home. Our goal is to create a laid back shopping experience for you in the middle of Mid City. A chance for you to skip the big box stores and shop small in your neighborhood with your very own favorite local makers. We’re excited to take this from our backyard into the heart of the city, we look forward to seeing you!

May 13 :: Check out Small Fry’s Kids Nutrition and Cooking Classes happening at Crossfit Zachary! Healthy Hands Cooking is the perfect opportunity for children to learn nutrition and cooking skills that foster healthy lifestyles in an intimate learning experience that is both fun and empowering.

May 13 :: No Child Wet Behind 5k and 1 Mile Fun Run at BREC’s Highland Road Park is to benefit the Junior League of Baton Rouge’s Diaper Bank. It is for all ages and will feature special events for children ages 2-12 from St. George Fire Department, Whole Foods, Lexlee’s Kids, and more! Not a runner? Bring a pack of diapers will gain you entrance into the kids events!

May 13 :: Stop by BREC’s FAE Fest – Swamp 20th Birthday Party as the Bluebonnet Swamp celebrates 20 years of connecting people to nature!We’ll have face-painting, crafts, games, hands-on activity stops along the trail, even dragon-petting! And of course birthday cake while it lasts. Fairies, sprites, gnomes and elves of all ages are welcome – and costumes are certainly encouraged!May 13-14 :: Join us at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum for BASF Kids’ Lab: Hold Everything, where kids ages 6-12 can explore and experiment. Participants may preregister Monday through noon Thursday prior to the program by e-mailing [email protected]

May 13 :: Baby Grand at Woman’s Hospital is a fair for pregnant women and their partners. This free event includes classes, tours, door prizes, local vendors and meeting and interviewing pediatricians!

May 14 :: At Mother’s Day Open Class: Teacup on Canvas at Painting and Pinot, we will be painting the “Teacup” painting. Ages 2-12 will paint on an 11×14 canvas ($25) and ages 13+ will paint on a 16×20 canvas. Each painter will need to register. Light refreshments will be served. Younger painters will finish early and may not need to stay the full 2 hours.

May 14 :: Celebrate Mother’s Day at the Zoo! The first 100 mothers to arrive, will receive a free flower, courtesy of Billy Heromans. There will be keeper chats and shows in the education amphitheater throughout the day.

May 19 :: Enjoy BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp at night with Flashlight Night @ the Swamp! Staff will be facilitating live animal encounters and running special nature films. The swamp trails can be really dark at night so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. Close-toed shoes and insect repellent are recommended.

May 20 :: Bring the whole family and join Hike it Baby Baton Rouge on this nature hike for Kids to Parks Day! We’ll walk about 2 miles in the woods at BREC’s Frenchtown Road Conservation Area.

May 21 :: Artist Q&A: Gustave Blache III will answer questions and discuss the people, places and his own artistic process that went into the making of A Work in Process: Paintings by Gustave Blache III on exhibit at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum.

May 22 :: Come to River Center Branch Library for Books! Cards! Fun!!! Monday, hear Amelia Bedelia’s Family Album by Peggy Parish.  Then, play a game of Old Maid!  For ages 6-9.  For more information, call 389-4959.

May 25 :: To celebrate the new Wimpy Kid movie and prepare for summer, we will read portions of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul by Jeff Kinney and his non-fiction book The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary then create travel journals and play a few “car games” like 20 questions and hangman. Ages 8-11. Please register.

May 26 :: The first annual Dance In The Sun Experience Conference located at the Embassy Suites is a one-day whole woman intensive that will feature keynotes, giveaways, a panel discussion, and networking to provide attendees with ample resources to design their definition of Success.

May 26 :: Make it a Movie Night: Ms. Doubtfire at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre. Concessions available for purchase.

May 26 :: The Petite Princess Comapny and BREC’s Liberty Lagoon present SummerFest, featuring princess appearances, facepainting and more!

May 27 :: Solarviewing at BREC’s Highland Road Park Observatory gives you the opportunity to see the highest level of solar activity for the next 10-20 years. Protective clothing and sun-screen recommended.

May 27-28 :: Join us at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum for BASF Kids’ Lab: Hold Everything, where kids ages 6-12 can explore and experiment. Participants may preregister Monday through noon Thursday prior to the program by e-mailing [email protected]

May 30 :: Help us kick off Summer Reading!  Stop by the Jones Creek Regional Library to help us Color Our World. After picking up their summer reading materials, children are invited to cooperatively color one of 3 murals that will help us decorate for summer reading.  All ages.  No registration necessary. 

Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families

Wednesdays :: Art Imagination: Baringer at BREC’s Baringer Park will allow participants, ages 5-12, to create arts and crafts projects after receiving inspiration from reading and/or hearing an illustrated story from a book, movie, poster or other medium.

Fridays :: Relax with a feature length film, popcorn and punch at TGIF Movie Matinee @ the Library, the Jones Creek Branch. 

Fridays & Saturdays :: During Evening Sky Viewing at BREC’s Highland Road Park Observatory (HRPO), a professional-grade telescope at HRPO is unlocked to showcase the Baton Rouge sky in all its glory (weather permitting). This season, visitors should expect to see Uranus and Neptune!

Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.

Saturdays :: Enjoy singing, dancing, sharing stories, and puppets with Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show. This unique theater program gets young children on their toes for a celebration of the art and science of the seasons at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum.
