March is here along with its warmer weather. With all the Spring anticipation, we have gathered our favorite family-friendly events in and around Baton Rouge this month and featured them here in the monthly guide.

Red Stick Moms Need to Know :: Baton Rouge Activities in March 2018
March 2 :: Check out Stories in Art at the LSU Museum of Art – a kid-sized program designed to support reading and art making for ages 0-6 with parent/caregivers. Enjoy a book and art project designed to make families comfortable exploring in a museum setting. This program continues the first Friday of each month with a different story and activity each time. Topics will be announced via Facebook the week of the event. Free.
March 2 :: Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss! In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ 114th birthday, join us as we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss and make a tie-on Cat in the Hat. All children under the age of 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited to 15 children. March 3 :: Join us at the 7th annual Angling Against Autism Fishing Tournament and Family Day! During the tournament, family friendly activities begin at 11:00 am at Cabela’s in Gonzales including a $10 all you can eat wild game and seafood cook-off, kid’s zone with bounce house and caricature artist, silent auction, $2,000 Cabela’s shopping spree raffle, and more!
March 3 :: Participants in the Great Inflatable Race will run, jog, dive, bounce, and dodge their way through our course filled with massive inflatable obstacles! Don’t believe us? The infamous Volcano Escape (one of our fan favorites) is over two stories tall and weighs over 3,000 lbs! This bouncy course contains between 8-10 giant inflatables that will bounce, bump, and slide you all over the place! The race is not timed or limited to just athletes—everyone of every age and level of fitness is invited to be active, social, and have a great time bouncing through the town.
March 3 :: Harb’s Oasis Continues! Join us for our Grand Re-Opening just in time to celebrate Spring! There will be fun and drawings throughout the day. The first 50 customers will get a free goldfish in glass fish bowl. Every purchase is entered into a drawing to win one of 5 gift cards! March 3 :: StoryTime in the Garden, a collaborative community project of the Junior League of Baton Rouge and the LSU Ag Center, will be hosting this event. Parents with children ages 3-8 are invited to join in the fun. Registration is not required and the event is free of charge. It also promotes early childhood literacy in the greater Baton Rouge community while also educating children and families about the importance of healthy eating and active lifestyles through storytelling, crafts, and activities. This creative mix of storytelling and imaginative, hands-on craft activities for children will quickly become a family favorite.
March 3-4, 8-10 :: Join Christian Youth Theater for a performance of this fully-staged, Broadway-style musical, The Little Mermaid. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”
March 3, 10 & 17 :: Stop by Alaina’s Playland on Saturdays from 12:00-2:00pm to meet and greet the Easter Bunny and to participate in FREE spring time activities! We hope to see you there!
March 4 :: LASM March First Sunday – sometimes the best things in life are free. With free admission and unlimited planetarium shows for only $6, make your family and your budget happy with a trip to the Art & Science Museum. This month’s program sponsored by The Advocate
March 7 :: At the Bluebonnet Regional Library, Discovery Dome presents Magic Tree House: Space Mission in which a mysterious M sends Jack and Annie on a fun-filled journey. For ages 5 to 10. March 6 :: If you are ready to take action to prevent gun violence in our community, please join the Baton Rouge Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America group for our March meeting. We will be discussing our plans for visiting the state legislature on Advocacy Day.
March 6 :: Painting and Pinot specializes in providing art enrichment for both children and adults. In our classes designed for children, we will create a project that students will take home that day. Students will learn and experience different types of art. Students will also learn about famous painters and art history. This Homeschool Art Class series is designed for students ages 5 and up. Parents can either drop children off or stay to accompany them during class. You will need to sign up for each class that you want to attend. This session will focus on Watercolor.
March 8 :: Storytime at Lulu & Bean is a great way for parents and littles to enjoy an outing that is child-focused and interactive in a safe, tranquil environment. We will sit together as a group with the story teller for 20-30 minutes of interactive reading.The books we choose to read will be best suited for babies and toddlers, up to age 3. Snacks will be served for all as well as coffee for parents!
March 10 :: Character Toddler Time at Sky Zone! Calling all pups — Chase and Marshall are ready for action! Bring your little ones to Sky Zone for 90 minutes of jump time with their favorite characters. Tickets are just $13 and will sell out so purchase yours online today!
March 10 :: Explore the world of engineering with LASM at our fifth annual Engineering Day! In partnership with LSU College of Engineering, this fun-filled festival will feature interactive stations showcasing a wide array of engineering and design specialties including robotics, 3D printing, bridge building, electricity, nano science, architecture, chemistry, solar powered cars, medical physics, and more.
March 10 :: Looking for good, clean, family fun….AND to win prizes?! If so, the The Pinwheel Challenge is for you. Join us at Team Automotive Group Sportsplex. March 10 :: Join us at the Jones Creek Regional Library for Read Across America- Fox in Socks! We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a fun storytime including excerpts from Fox in Socks, and from A Pair of Socks by Stuart J. Murphy. The children will play the “match the sock from the dryer” game, and make a colorful fox in socks paper bag puppet to take home. For ages 5-8. Registration is required. March 10 :: Join us at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center for Rockin’ at the Swamp to explore the exciting world of rocks, minerals, gemstones and fossils. Add to your rock collection at the Rockhound Market. Try your skill scaling the rock climbing wall. Learn to identify different rocks and minerals on the Treasure Trail. Experience the excitement of the gold rush in the Gold Mine. Explore ancient life forms at the Fossil Quarry. Paint your own Rock Animal in the craft corner. And so much more! This is one rockin’ day of fun highlighting geology and earth science that you don’t want to miss. No need to register. Admission is charged at the door.
March 10 :: Campout 2.0 at Tickfaw State Park is a fun excursion where BREC staff will accompany families on a camping adventure, complete with camping, hiking, campfires and more!
March 10 :: La Divina Italian Cafe will feature LIVE music with 16 year old 2018 American Idol Contestant: ABC Season 1, and 2017 Bayou Idol Winner, Chaislyn Jane. She is very popular with kids and loves to sing their favorite songs by request.

March 10 :: Sleep Workshop at Cullen’s Babyland & Playland is for parents of infants and toddlers to learn successful and proven healthy sleep habits from a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant, so your family can start sleeping well again! March 10-11 :: Mistletoe in March Shopping Extravaganza! Come find a few of your favorite things this March at our 2nd Annual Spring Shopping Extravaganza! March 13 :: Blimey! It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day! Luckily, we have a cute make & take to get you into the spirit – Leprechan’s Pot of Gold Make & Take at the Central Library! Come and make a leprechaun who has fallen head first into his pot of gold! For ages 3 and up!
March 13 :: Zoo & Me Morning – The Wearing of the Green is a program is designed for 3- to 5-year-old children accompanied by a parent or guardian and will incorporate many exciting activities including a train ride, animal encounters, art projects, “Zooper” snacks and many other hands-on projects that you and your child can enjoy together. March 15 :: The Baton Rouge Zoo’s chapter of American Association of Zoo Keepers presents Painting with a Purpose at Painting with a Twist Baton Rouge! Proceeds from PWAP will directly help the Zoo! Adults only (21+).
March 16 :: To thank all of our Friends of the Zoo members, the Zoo invites members for an exclusive evening to see what the Zoo is like after the gates close to the public for Members Night at the Zoo. This special members’ appreciation party will include keeper chats, animal enrichments and other activities throughout the Zoo. Pre-registration is not required; simply present a valid membership card and photo ID for admittance. Free for all Friends of the Zoo members. Admission from 4:00-7:00pm, grounds close at 8:00pm.
March 16 :: Check out Women of NASA – LEGO Builders’ Workshop at the Main Library Branch. After reading an excerpt from Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream by Tanya Lee Stone and cleansing our palate with the silly space adventure Life on Mars, we will proceed to the Lego sets to build our own spaceships. March 17 :: Don’t miss the Wearin’ of the Green, St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Since 1986, this family-friendly parade has been rolling through the beautiful Hundred Oaks area. Visit our website for the parade route. Enjoy bagpipe bands, marching bands, dignitaries along with many decorated floats. Event is free to public.
March 17 :: Celebrate “Being Green” and learn how you can help wild animals and wild places at special amphitheater programs during Spring Green at the Zoo. Games and crafts will also be included for the kids.

March 23 :: Join us at Java Mama for our monthly “Lunch and Learn”, a complimentary, child-friendly seminar series hosted by Java Mama and West Pediatrics. This Lunch and Learn will feature Pharmacist Dr. Orlando of Parker’s Pharmacy, who will be discussing tips for getting your kids to cooperate with taking medicine!
March 24 :: Come hunt for eggs at a special Saturday afternoon Easter Egg Dive Splash & Play at Crawfish Aquatics! Swimmers will be divided into waves by age to collect eggs in the pool. After their wave swimmers can turn in eggs to the front desk for prizes!
March 24 :: Dancin’ in the Streets is a much-anticipated yearly fundraiser for the Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre. Bringing together the music of Phat Hat, delectable tastes and sips from local vendors, exciting activities, silent auction items, and of course, lots and lots of dancing. This perfectly themed event allows you to kick up your heels while supporting an organization that brings the fine art of dance to local stages. With past appearances by local celebrities, who knows who you’ll spot dancin’ in the streets!
March 24 :: The Junior League of Baton Rouge is excited to announce that the most anticipated children’s event from 2017 is ROLLING back into Baton Rouge in 2018! Touch A Truck is a unique, interactive, one-day event that allows children to see, touch, and explore their favorite big trucks, vehicles, heavy equipment and more, as well as meet the individuals who protect, serve, and build Baton Rouge.

Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families
Saturdays :: Singing, dancing, sharing stories, and puppets – Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum gets young children on their toes for a celebration of the art and science of the seasons.
Saturdays :: Mindful Movers Kids Yoga Series uses adventure stories to guide children through the benefits of yoga in a fun, often silly, way- designed to promote the holistic development of children. Our classes in schools have proven so popular, (with the parents and teachers as well as the kids!) so we are excited to offer our first series of community classes at Gymboree Play & Music of Baton Rouge!
Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
