May is here! With school winding down and summer approaching, take the time to make fun memories together during what is often a crazy transition! We have gathered our favorite family-friendly events in and around Baton Rouge this month and featured them here in the monthly guide.
Red Stick Moms Need to Know :: Baton Rouge Activities in May 2018
May 1-2 :: Meal Prep your family meals like a Chef with Mama Chef Meal Prep Strategy. Includes recipes, meal planner worksheet, access to tips, inspiration, and strategy to implement a cooking schedule.
May 4 :: Stories in Art at the LSU Museum of Art is a kid-sized program designed to support reading and art making for ages 0-6 with parent/caregivers. Enjoy a book and art project designed to make families comfortable exploring in a museum setting. This program continues the first Friday of each month with a different story and activity each time. Topics will be announced via Facebook the week of the event. Free.
May 5 :: Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge’s Active for Autism 5K Run/Walk & Fun Fest promotes awareness, acceptance & inclusion of those who are affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder. This event provides community education while generating partnerships with families & organizations across the Greater Baton Rouge, eight-parish area. Proceeds from AFA support FHFGBR’s program: the Resource Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder (RCASD) which provides individualized services, information & support needed to positively enhance the independence, productivity & inclusion of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. FHFGBR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
May 5 :: Join us at Java Mama for a Cinco De Mayo party – just for kids! Children will make maracas, have fun with a pinata, games, and more!
May 5 :: Get ready for family fun and fast horses at BREC’s Farr Park’s annual Derby Day event. Come dressed to impress but also to relax as you enjoy all the action of the Kentucky Derby live on the big screen outside the beautiful Farr Park Equestrian Center. You can bet on a good time complete with derby-themed activities for adults and kids, food (we hear crawfish is on the menu), drinks, music, mint juleps and more! Tickets available at brec.org/derbyday, $20/adult, $10/child.
May 6 :: Free First Sunday at the LSU Museum of Art includes free admission all day, with fun activities geared for children of all ages in the LSU Museum of Art’s Pennington Family Foundation Education Gallery. (fifth floor)
May 6 :: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at BREC’s Independence Park with authentic food, great music, children’s village, arts and crafts, information vendors, family games and more.
May 6 :: Sometimes the best things in life are free. With free admission and unlimited planetarium shows for only $6, make your family and your budget happy with a trip to the Art & Science Museum for Free First Sunday.
May 7-12 :: Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13! Time to show Mom some love with a special card. Visit the Zachary Library Branch for Tulip Heart Mother’s Day Cards: Make and Take. We will have various supplies at the children’s desk so you can create a 3D Tulip card to give to Mom or the “Mom” in your life. No registration required. While supplies last.
May 8 :: Painting and Pinot specializes in providing art enrichment for both children and adults. In our classes designed for children, we will create a project that students will take home that day. Students will learn and experience different types of art. Students will also learn about famous painters and art history. Home School Art Class is designed for students ages 5 and up. Parents can either drop children off or stay to accompany them during class. You will need to sign up for each class that you want to attend. This session will focus on Mixed Media.
May 10 :: We are excited to now offer Storytime at Lulu & Bean! This is a great way for parents and littles to enjoy an outing that is child-focused and interactive in a safe, tranquil environment. We will sit together as a group with the story teller for 20-30 minutes of interactive reading.The books we choose to read will be best suited for babies and toddlers, up to age 3. Snacks will be served for all as well as coffee for parents! Each storytime session will be held at Lulu & Bean at 9:30 in the morning on the second Thursday of each month. Please share the news of this fun event with your friends!
May 10 :: Chick-fil-a at the Mall of Louisiana hosts a Story Time in the play area on the first floor, 11:00-11:30am. Each child in attendance will receive a free 4 count nugget.
May 12 :: Join us for A Wild Day at the Rowe with Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo! This will be a family-friendly event you don’t want to miss!! There will be live animals to pet, interactive children’s activities, live music by DJ Bob, and more!
May 12 :: Join BREC, the Botanical Garden Foundation and the many others who helped renovate and expand the Independence Botanical Gardens with a Grand Opening! Ribbon Cutting Ceremony beginning at 10 a.m. near the library plaza and Café building, with playground ribbon cutting and activities to follow. Featuring: Lawn Garden, Butterfly and Parterre Garden, Granite Millstone Fountain, Promenade and Walkways and Pavlions and Playground. Activities include Garden Tours, Story Time with Beauty, BREC on the Geaux, BREC Art, Mother’s Day Crafts, food, fun and more!
May 12-13 :: Find out at BASF Kids’ Lab: The Rainbow Connection – is black ink made of only black dye? Can you create a rainbow just by adding water? Grab some markers and filter paper to explore the magic behind a colorful chemical process. Each child also receives a cool backpack with surprises inside! Participants may preregister Monday through noon Thursday prior to the program by e-mailing [email protected]; on-site registration is available the day of each program on a first come, first served basis. Groups that schedule in advance may receive confirmed reservations and discounted admission rates. Ages 6-12 with accompanying adults.
May 15 :: Chick-fil-a at the Mall of Louisiana hosts Military Heroes Night, 6:00-7:00pm, where kids will learn about Memorial Day and do crafts.
May 18 :: You spoke, we listened!! Tempt your taste buds with another Food Truck Round-Up at the Rowe!
May 18 :: BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp welcomes you to enjoy the Swamp at night by visiting us during our Swamp Flashlight Night! Staff will be facilitating live animal encounters and running special nature films. Enjoy a leisurely night hike with your family and friends. The swamp trails can be really dark at night – so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. If you don’t have one, check out our gift shop for some options. Close-toed shoes and insect repellant are recommended. General admission applies; free for pass holders.
May 18 :: Enjoy comfortable indoor seating during our monthly free film series – Make it a Movie Night: The Incredibles at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre. Concessions are available for purchase. No outside food or drinks please.
May 19 :: Air out your parachute pants and tease those bangs, baby! It’s 80’s night for The Emerge Center’s 4th annual gala – Emerge Into The Journey. Join us for a totally rad night with performances by The Molly Ringwalds and a Journey tribute by The Steve Augeri Band, former lead singer of Journey! All proceeds will benefit The Emerge Center.
May 19 :: Join the fun at this unique event, Inclusive Colors at BREC’s Zachary Community Park, for all ages and abilities! Adults and kids of all abilities will run, walk, dance and play their way through this half mile-bubble run. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome. Once you cross the finish line, there is still plenty of fun to be had as participants can create a messy masterpiece using a variety of mediums and your own style of painting, hands, brushes, water shooters and more! There will also be an Inclusive Network Expo with a variety of booths throughout the park.
May 19 :: The Family Fit Day 4k is part of HealthyBR’s Family Fit Day at BREC’s City Park on May 19, 2018. Race start is at 8:30am and kicks off a great day of family friendly activities. Local non-profits benefit from the Family Fit Day 4k! Each registrant chooses a non-profit beneficiary of your registration; $15 of your registration goes to your non-profit, $5 goes to HealthyBR. Registration includes a personal pedometer compliments of HealthyBR and Humana. T-shirts are given to all participants who complete the 4k course.
May 19 :: Happy Birthday Bluebonnet Swamp! We’re celebrating 21 years of connecting people to nature on Saturday, May 19. Come hang out with our critters and enjoy a stroll on the trails. We’ll have live animal encounters, crafts, games, and birthday cake while it lasts. Best of all, admission is on us!

May 24-27 :: CYT presents Willy Wonka Jr. at the LSU Shaver Theater! The delicious adventures experienced by Charlie Bucket on his visit to Willy Wonka’s mysterious chocolate factory light up the stage in this captivating adaptation of Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film starring Gene Wilder in addition to a host of fun new songs, Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. is a scrumdidilyumptious musical guaranteed to delight everyone’s sweet tooth. Various show times available.
May 26 :: Visit the Greenwell Springs Library Branch for Memorial Day Star Wand Story Craft! Children will make a red, white, and blue star shaped wand following the story, Memorial Day surprise by Theresa Martin Golding. For ages 7-11. Limited to 20 persons. Registration is required. Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families
Saturdays :: Singing, dancing, sharing stories, and puppets – Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum gets young children on their toes for a celebration of the art and science of the seasons.
Saturdays :: Bring your little ones to gather around our “camp fire” and learn about stars and constellation in the local nighttime sky during Planetarium Family Hour & Stargazing at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. After this educator-led interactive sky presentation, sit back and enjoy a featured planetarium show.
Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
Every Day until Mother’s Day :: Mrs. Heather’s Strawberry Farm has been a great attraction and place for kids as well as adults for more than decades in the Hammond & Albany area. When you come to the farm, you’ll get to enjoy fresh & delicious strawberries and all the fun activities that Mrs. Heather has set up for you!
