September is here, and with it, the beginning of all things fall! We have gathered our favorite family-friendly events in and around Baton Rouge this month and featured them here in the monthly guide.

Red Stick Moms Need to Know :: Baton Rouge Activities in September 2018
September 1 :: Help us celebrate the 20th anniversary of the publishing of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone for aHarry Potter Extravaganza! We’ll play friendly rounds of quidditch, stump you with tricky trivia, craft up a storm, dazzle you with wares from our Muggle Market, and so much more! To close out the evening the wizard rock band Tonks and The Aurors will rock our socks off on the plaza! Wear your best wizard regalia and help the East Baton Rouge Parish Library celebrate one of the world’s most beloved stories at this special free event.
September 1 :: Whether you’re young or young at heart, come get creative with us the first Saturday of every month at Hands-On Happenings at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. For September, create your own Pop Art print and learn about the printmaking process using ink, crayons, and foam.
September 2 :: Spend some time with your friends or family this First Sunday at the Art & Science Museum. Free admission to the galleries, $6 reduced admission to planetarium shows, and a variety of art and science exhibitions and activities make this a fun and unique day out for all ages.
September 2 :: Free First Sunday at the LSU Museum of Art, with fun activities geared for children of all ages in the LSU Museum of Art’s Pennington Family Foundation Education Gallery.
September 4 :: All ages can enjoy time together at the Crawfish Swim School at Bayou Oaks 73 playing or practicing swimming skills. One hour time slots to Splash & Play! are available during school holidays and some weekends.
September 4 :: Special Edition Bayou Time Babysitting Kid’s Night at La Divina Italian Cafe with Storytelling, Singalongs, and fun plus FREE Kids meal with purchase of Adult entree.
September 6 :: Don’t miss the Very Hungry Caterpillar Pin Story/Craft at the Central Library Branch! Do you love caterpillars! Well so do we! Join us as we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Afterwards, we will make our own hungry, colorful caterpillars! Ages 3-7. Registration is required.
September 6 :: Grab a blanket or lawn chair and join BREC for a Movie in the Park: Coco under the stars. Enjoy free popcorn and punch. The movie will be moved inside the gym in the event of inclement weather. All movies begin at dusk. Open to all ages. Participants under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult. September 7 :: The Zachary Chamber of Commerce is hosting the first ever Downtown Live at the Gazebo! Mark your calendars for Parish County Line on September 7th!
September 8 :: Do birds get cold in the winter? What do they eat in winter time? Come learn how to care for our feathery friends during the Children’s Gardening Series at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens! This program is held for ages 6-12 years old. All children MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the event. Register in advance to Angie Wall at [email protected] A $15 fee is required for each child. Participants will receive a snack and a take home craft. Attendance is limited to 30.
September 11 :: Held the second Tuesday of every month, Zoo & Me Morning is designed for 3- to 5-year-old children accompanied by a parent or guardian. Programs are 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and will incorporate many exciting activities including a train ride, animal encounters, art projects, “Zooper” snacks and many other hands-on projects that you and your child can enjoy together. $18 per session for one child with one parent/guardian, $12 for each additional person (adult or child), Pre-registration required. 225.775.3877, option 2.
September 13 :: Audition for CYT Baton Rouge’s “Peter Pan!” Ages 8-18. Must be enrolled in a CYT class.
September 14 :: Enjoy comfortable indoor seating during Make it a Movie Night: The Iron Giant at BREC’s Independence Park Theatre. Concessions are available for purchase. No outside food or drinks please.
September 14 :: Java Mama and Salon Du Sud have created “Beauty & Brews” just for Ladies! Salon Du Sud will introduce styling tips, beauty hacks, giveaways, and door prizes! Delicious food and espresso beverages will be provided by Java Mama. The cost is $40 per person.
September 15 :: During Fall Paper Leaf Wreath Story Craft at the Greenwell Springs Library Branch, children will color and glue paper leaves to create their own Fall wreath following the story, Peppa’s Windy Fall Day adapted by Barbara Winthrop. Ages 3-6
September 15 :: McMains Children’s Developmental Center’s 10th Annual Kids Bike Event is designed for children with disabilities ages 3-21 to enjoy a fun morning of bike riding and friendly competition. There will also be a Sibling Alley with games and activities for all children!
September 15 :: Join us for our annual Perkins Rowe Arts Festival in collaboration with the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge! The event comprises an arts market with 40+ local artisans and vendors, live performances, a children’s interactive area, and more! Performances and demonstrations by Brian Kelly and the University of Louisiana Lafayette print-makers, Clay Achee, Salsa Ardiente, and the Airseekers! This event is free and open to the public.
September 15-16 :: Have fun with chemistry at these 45-minute hands-on workshops for kids 6–12 and their accompanying adults – BASF Kids’ Lab at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. Enjoy a different activity each month: September is Energy Loves Produce. Register on-site the day of the program or email [email protected] by the Thursday prior to your session. Space is limited. Sponsored by BASF.
September 16 :: Join other moms just like you who are breastfeeding their little ones for Breastfeeding Support Group at Ochsner. Share stories and tips on what works and what doesn’t with moms who are living the experience. The mother-led Breastfeeding Support group meetings are held once a month on Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:00pm in the hospital’s first floor classroom. All pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and nursing babies are welcome!
September 19 :: Join us for International Talk Like a Pirate Day at the River Center Library Branch! After reading the book Shiver Me Letters: A Pirate ABC by June Sobel, create a pirate or parrot craft using the letter “P”. For ages 7-9.
September 22 :: Mommy and Me: Lego Superman at Painting and Pinot is made especially for our younger painters (ages 2-9). Parents will help children paint their masterpiece. A light snack will be provided. Please make sure to register for each child in attendance. Parents do not pay since they will be sharing a canvas with their child.
September 23 :: Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre hosts open children’s Nutcracker auditions from 12:00-4:00pm. Times vary by age and gender, please check website! $10 audition fee.
September 26 :: Join us at the Baton Rouge Clinic for a FREE prenatal class with our pediatricians to discuss things to do before the baby comes, what you can expect while in the hospital, what to expect for your baby in the first days to weeks after birth, and more.
September 29 :: Crawfish Swim School at Bayou Oak’s Water Babies is a calm and quiet class, designed to provide your family with a positive and safe introduction into a lessons class environment. Instructors will provide you with tips on how to develop comfort and confidence in the water with your little ones.

September 29-30 :: The NEW Harb’s Oasis hosts Maker’s Market at the Oasis, showcasing various makers’ creations for you to buy while exploring the beautiful garden center and oasis!
Give Back Opportunity
Associates in Pediatric Dentistry will be collecting donations at all 4 locations through October 1 to benefit the Salvation Army Christmas Angel Program. Angel donations needed: new – toys and children’s clothing; gently used – books and educational games.
Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families
Wednesdays (excluding the 4th) :: Junior Tennis Open House Series at BREC’s Greenwood Park Tennis Center is designed for 6-17 year olds to come out and learn to play tennis.
Saturdays :: Singing, dancing, sharing stories, and puppets – Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum gets young children on their toes for a celebration of the art and science of the seasons.
Saturdays :: Bring your little ones to gather around our “camp fire” and learn about stars and constellation in the local nighttime sky during Planetarium Family Hour & Stargazing at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. After this educator-led interactive sky presentation, sit back and enjoy a featured planetarium show.
Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
Sundays :: Join us for Sunday Movie Matinee at the Jones Creek Library Branch for a feature-length movie. Punch and popcorn will be provided.
When You Wish Entertainment and English Turn Country Club brings you the most Villainous Family Halloween event of the season: “Chillin’ With The Villains“ at English Turn Golf & Country Club! On October 26, 6:30-9:00pm, the Evil Queen, Captain Hook, The Shadow Man, and the Mistress of All Evil will be invading the club and can’t wait to show you that Villains really do have the most fun!
