August 3-4 :: Don’t miss the Posh Petites Fall Warehouse Sale! PreSale starts on August 3, 12:00-4:00pm, $5 cash at door and the sale is on August 4, August7:00am-2:00pm at 7102 Antioch Rd in Baton Rouge.

August 4 :: Individuals with disabilities and their family and friends are invited to attend the Friends & Family Luau at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon. Each person is asked to bring a swimsuit and towel. Through a partnership with Families Helping Families of greater Baton Rouge, BREC is able to offer this program that includes swimming, music, snacks and fun! August 4 :: When You Wish Entertainment is hosting an event for kids who love big bows and dancing – Jump Back to School with JJ! Join us to learn a dance from JJ, decorate your very own bow, enjoy a delicious dinner, and a dance party with bounce time afterward!!! Tickets required.

August 4 :: This class at Painting and Pinot is just for Teachers (and their friends!). Enjoy a specially discounted class and make some artwork for your classroom! Classes are great for all skill levels. Bring your favorite adult beverage and your sense of adventure! Our incredible artists will lead you in creating your very own masterpiece. At this class, we will be painting our “Teacher Fleur de Lis” painting on a 16×20 canvas. All supplies are provided.

August 4 :: Back to School Mini Sessions with Cindy Abney Photography will be 15 minutes sessions in studio to capture your little one before starting the new school year. 

August 4 :: Don’t miss Hands-On Happenings: Back to School Bags at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum! Whether you’re young or young at heart, come get creative with us the first Saturday of every month at this hands-on workshop. For August, create your own pencil bag for back to school, a cosmetics bag for travelling in style, and more!

August 5 :: Spend some time with your friends or family this August First Sunday at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. Free admission to the galleries, $6 reduced admission to planetarium shows, and a variety of art and science exhibitions and activities make this a fun and unique day out for all ages.

August 5 :: Free admission all day on Free First Sunday, with fun activities geared for children of all ages in the LSU Museum of Art’s Pennington Family Foundation Education Gallery. (fifth floor)

August 7 :: At our painting classes at Painting and Pinot, you are able to find your inner artist! Classes are great for all skill levels. Bring your favorite adult beverage and your sense of adventure! Our incredible artists will lead you in creating your very own masterpiece. At this class, we will be painting our “Two Oysters” painting on a 16×20 canvas. All supplies are provided.

At this class, we will be painting our “Gilded Cross” painting on a 16×20 canvas. All supplies are provided.

August 10 :: We welcome you to enjoy the Swamp at night by visiting us during our Swamp Flashlight Night at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center! Staff will be facilitating live animal encounters and running special nature films. Enjoy a leisurely night hike with your family and friends. Trail access ends at 8:15 p.m. The swamp trails can be really dark at night, so don’t forget to bring a flashlight. If you don’t have one, check out our gift shop for some options. Close-toed shoes and insect repellant are recommended. General admission applies; free for pass holders.

August 10 :: Grab a blanket or lawn chair and join BREC for Movie in the Park: Cars 3 under the stars at Nairn Drive Park. Enjoy free popcorn and punch. The movie will be moved inside the gym in the event of inclement weather. All movies begin at dusk. 

August 11 :: Join us for our annual Open House event at LAAPA’s Covington School of Music. Free demo lessons in preschool music, piano, voice, guitar, drum, violin, wind, brass, and more Raffles every half hour with great prizes and free tuition! Instrument hands on petting ZOO! August 11 :: Don’t miss Dinosaur Lego Story and Build at the Greenwell Springs Regional Library! Children will build Lego Dinosaurs and a dino-baby nest following stories, Disney’s The Good Dinosaur and Dino-Safari:  A Lego Adventure in the Real World.  Ages 5-8.

August 11 :: Mommy and Me: Girls League at Painting and Pinot is made especially for our younger painters (ages 2-9). Parents will help children paint their masterpiece. A light snack will be provided. Please make sure to register for each child in attendance. Parents do not pay since they will be sharing a canvas with their child.

August 13 :: Painting and Pinot specializes in providing art enrichment for both children and adults. In our Homeschool Art Classes designed for children, we will create a project that students will take home that day.  Students will learn and experience different types of art. Students will also learn about famous painters and art history. This art class series is designed for students ages 5 and up.  Parents can either drop children off or stay to accompany them during class.  You will need to sign up for each class that you want to attend. This class will focus on watercolor.

August 13-14 :: Crawfish Aquatics Novice (pre-swim team) and Swim Team placement evaluations will be held at CA location, 7150 Bluebonnet Blvd. Ages 5-8 years at 4:30pm and ages 9 & Older at 5:15pm. If your child can swim 12.5 yards freestyle & backstroke (and beyond!), we have a swim group for them. More info here, or contact [email protected] for details.

August 14 :: Held the second Tuesday of every month, Zoo & Me Morning – Tons of Turtles at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is designed for 3- to 5-year-old children accompanied by a parent or guardian. Programs are 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. and will incorporate many exciting activities including a train ride, animal encounters, art projects, “Zooper” snacks and many other hands-on projects that you and your child can enjoy together. $18 per session for one child with one parent/guardian, $12 for each additional person (adult or child), Pre-registration required. 225.775.3877, option 2.

August 17 :: BREC presents Story Comes to Life, a truly engaging story telling event, where the words come off the page at the Kerr Warren Recreation Center. There will be a book reading followed by a project that will bring the story to life.

August 18 :: Join us for our annual Open House event at LAAPA’s Mandeville School of Music & Dance. Free demo lessons in preschool music, piano, voice, guitar, drum, violin, wind, brass, parent and tot dance, ballet, tap, hip hop, tumbling, and more. August 18 :: Learn How to Draw a Dragon at the Jones Creek Regional Library! How to Draw a Dragon by Douglas Florian, is the book we’ll be reading for this program.  After the story, children will be guided on the steps for drawing a dragon, and then they will use watercolors to paint their creation.  Please dress for a mess.  Ages 3-6.  Registration is required.

August 18 :: Duck Duck Goose Day at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center gives visitors a first-hand look at waterfowl decoy carving, an art form firmly rooted in Louisiana’s rich cultural heritage, by featuring some of the region’s oldest and most rare decoys displayed by carvers and collectors from all over the Deep South and beyond. This year’s event honors decoy carvers from “Downriver” and south of New Orleans, as well as those from Shell Beach. This event has grown to be fun for the whole family with hands-on activities like the Waterfowl Identification Hike along our trails, the Carving Corner where visitors use soap to carve their own mini duck decoys, the Duck Box inflatable jump house, live baby ducklings in the Duck Pen, waterfowl-themed carnival prize booths, face-painting and more. Fly on over and join the fun! Admission: Children under 2: No Fee, Children 2-17: $4, Adults: $5, Pass members: $2.

August 18 :: The Mid City Makers Market was born when a holiday home trunk show outgrew the home. The move to a more public spot in Mid-City Baton Rouge made too much sense, we own the building and decided to pool our resources and see what could happen. Our goal is to create a laid back shopping experience for you in the middle of Mid City. A chance for you to skip the big box stores and shop small in your neighborhood with your very own favorite local makers. We’re excited to take this from our backyard into the heart of the city, we look forward to seeing you!

August 18-23 :: Do you love dogs? How about puppets? If you answered YES, The Dog Days of Summer: Paper Dog Hand Puppet Make & Take at the Zachary Branch Library is for you! Come by the library during the times listed and fold and decorate your own paper dog puppet during the “dog days of summer!.” Ages 6-11. No registration required. While supplies last. 

August 19 :: Join other moms just like you who are breastfeeding their little ones for the Breastfeeding Support Group. Share stories and tips on what works and what doesn’t with moms who are living the experience. The mother-led Breastfeeding Support group meetings are held once a month on Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm in the hospital’s first floor classroom. All pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and nursing babies are welcome!

August 21 :: ALL ARE INVITED to Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts’ Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting event!  Please join us, along with your elected officials & other members of the community, for a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to help celebrate the Grand Opening of Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts’ Mandeville School of Music & Dance’s brand new location! Light snacks will be served. Tours of the new facility while lessons are in session will be given to all interested. Faculty, Staff, Directors, Friends, Parents and Students of Louisiana Academy of Performing Arts will be there to greet you. The entire community is invited!

August 25 :: Water Babies at the Crawfish Swim School at Bayou Oaks is a calm and quiet class, designed to provide your family with a positive and safe introduction into a lessons class environment. Instructors will provide you with tips on how to develop comfort and confidence in the water with your little ones.

August 25 :: Run like a cheetah to BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo’s 13th annual Zoo Run Run 5K and ½ Mile Kids’ Fun Run! At the run, enjoy the scenery as you scamper, trot or gallop your way through BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. All proceeds from the race support your Baton Rouge Zoo and international cheetah conservation efforts. There will be food & refreshments for the whole family to enjoy after the race. And, anyone in your party who participates in the race or is there to support you, gains free admission to the Zoo as long as they’re on site before admission gates open to the public at 9:30am. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. ½ Mile Kids’ Fun Run begins at 7:45 a.m. 5K begins at 8:15 a.m.

August 26 :: Please join us for the End of Summer Dog Pool Pawty at Liberty Lagoon. Please be advised that this is a dog-friendly event. Participants will encounter dogs in various conditions (i.e. wet, unleashed, etc.). For the safety of everyone and every dog, all participants must comply with the “Pool Pawty” rules on our event page. This is not an event for small children younger than 5. 

August 27 :: Painting and Pinot specializes in providing art enrichment for both children and adults. In our Homeschool Art Classes designed for children, we will create a project that students will take home that day.  Students will learn and experience different types of art. Students will also learn about famous painters and art history. This art class series is designed for students ages 5 and up.  Parents can either drop children off or stay to accompany them during class.  You will need to sign up for each class that you want to attend. This class will focus on drawing.

August 28 :: Free Parent Munch-N-Learn, “Raising Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.” This will be a panel discussion with two Emerge board members who have children on the autism spectrum. They will discuss their experience raising children with autism and offer guidance and answer any general questions parents may have. 

August 31 :: Join us at Java Mama for our monthly “Lunch and Learn”, a complimentary, child-friendly seminar series hosted by Java Mama and West Pediatrics. This month will feature an informative discussion about adoption with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge.

Give Back Opportunity

Associates in Pediatric Dentistry will be collecting donations at all 4 locations through October 1 to benefit the Salvation Army Christmas Angel Program. Angel donations needed: new – toys and children’s clothing; gently used – books and educational games.

Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families

Tuesdays & Thursdays :: You won’t want to miss Movie Tavern’s Summer Kids’ Flicks Series! Fun films will be playing on select Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am. This series is a great opportunity for parents to take their kids to see their favorite movies for only $4! This ticket includes the movie and $4 off of food and beverage orders. Tickets are available at the box office at 9:30am on the day of each show! You will be able to select your seat at the box office once you arrive. See you there!

Wednesdays (excluding the 4th) :: Junior Tennis Open House Series at BREC’s Greenwood Park Tennis Center is designed for 6-17 year olds to come out and learn to play tennis. 

Saturdays :: Singing, dancing, sharing stories, and puppets – Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum gets young children on their toes for a celebration of the art and science of the seasons.

Saturdays :: Bring your little ones to gather around our “camp fire” and learn about stars and constellation in the local nighttime sky during Planetarium Family Hour & Stargazing at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. After this educator-led interactive sky presentation, sit back and enjoy a featured planetarium show.

Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
